Put AI to work in your business.

Muddy Programmer is a one-person software studio in Lexington, North Carolina. Seth Davis has spent twenty years building software for businesses, and the last three building AI systems that run in production. Whether you need a chatbot that knows your business, an agent that handles the busywork, a mobile app, a web platform, or the whole product, you get it built, tested, documented, and running.

Taking on new projects now, 15–20 hours a week. Remote, on US Eastern time.

What we build

  • AI assistants and agents

A chatbot that answers customer questions from your own documents. An assistant that drafts the replies, quotes, or reports your team writes by hand. An agent that reads incoming paperwork, pulls out what matters, and files it. Built on your data, connected to the tools you already use, and tested with evals so it keeps behaving after launch.

LangGraph, retrieval over your documents, MCP servers, Claude and OpenAI, LangSmith

  • Automation for the busywork

The repetitive work between systems: lead follow-up, scheduling, invoicing, data entry, weekly reports. Workflows and integrations that connect your CRM, email, SMS, payments, and spreadsheets, with AI in the loop where a judgment call is needed and a person in the loop where it isn’t worth the risk.

n8n, webhooks, GoHighLevel, Plivo, Resend, Stripe, Databricks

  • Mobile apps

iOS and Android from one codebase, TypeScript throughout. Push notifications, subscriptions and in-app purchases with server-side receipt validation, offline behavior that holds up, and the App Store and Play Store submissions carried through to approval.

React Native, Expo, StoreKit, Google Play Billing, OneSignal

  • Web apps and SaaS products

From a first version you can put in front of customers to a product that bills them every month. Accounts and sign-in, Stripe billing, admin dashboards, customer portals, and a deployment pipeline that ships every change safely.

React, Next.js, Node, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cloudflare, Railway

  • AI added to software you already have

You have a product and a team; you want AI in it without derailing the roadmap. A staff-level engineer works inside your codebase for a sprint or a quarter: the AI feature, the integration, the stalled migration, or the test coverage that has been on the list for a year.

Your stack, your repo, your process

  • Figuring out what to build

Not sure where AI fits, or whether it fits at all? A short paid engagement, an hour or a week, that looks at how your business actually runs and comes back with a written plan: what to automate, what it would cost, and what to leave alone. Yours to act on with or without us.

How it works

  1. Scope

Send a paragraph about what you’re trying to get done. Within a few days you get a written scope, a fixed price or an hourly estimate, and a short list of what’s needed from your side.

  2. Build

The code lives in an account you own from day one. Tests and automated checks from the first commit, a working demo every week, and nothing on the invoice you haven’t already seen.

  3. Ship

App store submissions, hosting on Cloudflare or Railway, error reporting, and a launch checklist that has actually been run before.

  4. Hand over

Plain-language documentation, a walkthrough call, and every login and key in your hands. Everything is yours: the code, the accounts, the data.

Fixed-price for scoped projects, hourly for ongoing work. Remote from North Carolina, with a written scope and agreement before anything starts.

Who you’re working with

Muddy Programmer is Seth Davis.

By day he is a Staff Software Engineer in AI Engineering at a healthcare technology company, where he architected a 26-agent platform that takes a developer’s workstation from bare machine to a running application. He also builds the LangGraph agents, retrieval pipelines, MCP servers, and Terraform pipelines that the product teams run on.

Before that, twelve years at Wells Fargo as lead front-end engineer on an online enrollment platform handling millions of authentication transactions a day, and as the team’s subject-matter expert on agentic AI and the Model Context Protocol. Earlier still: a building-management platform deployed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and emergency-management mobile apps for two state agencies.

He has built software for businesses, studios, and startups on the side since 2014, and has been writing software for a living since 2003.
